Foundation subjects are taught using a topic-based approach, initially based around the local area of Greenhithe. Greenhithe is rich in local history, as well as areas of geographical interest, and as a school we strongly believe that our children should both contribute and understand their local community. Each topic therefore looks at local impact, before considering impact in London and Kent, the wider UK and, where appropriate, across the world.
Each theme begins with a ‘Big Bang’ day where the children take part in a variety of fun activities that serves as a hook to create excitement and wonder for their upcoming learning. This is supported by both fiction and non-fiction texts to promote both English and the wider curriculum.
The school has a specialism of PE. Children enjoy PE lessons twice per week delivered by a dedicated PE coach, as well as a range of extra-curricular clubs on offer each week, run by both staff and external providers. The children also take part in a range of competitions and tournaments, in school, across our group of schools and with other schools in the local area. We currently hold a silver award for PE and are working towards gold this year.
We also will take part in a variety of special events including Black History Month, World Book Day and World Maths Day. Regular trips are encouraged for all year groups to supplement and consolidate learning outside of the classroom.
